Emergency Medical Sciences-Emergency Dispatch
Department:
Public Safety
Leads to:
Associate In Applied Science
Description:
This program provides the opportunity to explore thoroughly the highly technical and challenging arena of emergency dispatch. The dispatch is the first link in the 911 system. The program includes internships in communication centers throughout Kansas. In addition to classroom presentations, laboratory sessions are conducted in a 911 center laboratory dedicated to HCC Emergency Dispatch student skill development.
The HCC Emergency Communications Center training laboratory was developed to provide realism in training. Simulated calls and real-time emergencies are managed by students as they unfold in the laboratory setting. The center was funded through grants from the Kansas Technology Enterprise Corporation. (KTEC) and through the Kansas Department of Education's innovative technologies grant program. Mastery of the performance standards are essential for the graduate of this program who will work in 911 centers in industrial communication centers and in numerous types of emergency management agencies.
This program may lead to a certificate or to an Associate of Applied Science degree. Courses are typically offered in an accelerated format. Course schedules are often on weekends to better allow working students to attend the program.
